Job Shadowing

The Mercy Hospital Joplin Medical Education Department coordinates all shadowing experiences for Mercy Clinics and Hospitals located in Joplin, Carthage, Neosho, Webb City, Miami, Columbus, and Pittsburg.

We strive to give students the opportunity to explore healthcare careers in an effort to provide the necessary knowledge to make decisions for furthering their education and identify desirable career paths.  Job shadowing at Mercy allows individuals the opportunity to follow and observe a healthcare professional as they carry out their job responsibilities.  Individuals requesting a shadowing experience should be 16 years of age or older, and enrolled in high school, vo-tech, home-schooling, or college courses.

The Mercy Hospital Joplin Medical Education department will facilitate all scheduling for students in our community and you will not need to identify your own preceptor to shadow.  We ask that you not contact departments directly to seek out a preceptor.  We’ll be happy to take care of those details for you.  List “Katie Harden” under the Preceptor section of the application.  To shadow, please submit the Shadowing/Observation Application.

Shadowing is available in the below departments.  Please note that some areas limit shadowing to a maximum of 8 hours.

Clinical Rotations

Medical Students, Nurse Practitioner Students, Physician Assistant Students, and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist Students interested in completing clinical rotations at Mercy in Southwest Missouri and Southeast Kansas should submit rotation requests to the Medical Education Department. The Mercy Hospital Joplin Medical Education Department coordinates and assigns all clinical preceptors for Mercy Joplin and its surrounding communities, Carthage, Columbus, Neosho, and Pittsburg.  We request provider level students not contact clinics directly.  An academic affiliation agreement signed by the program and Mercy must be in place prior to the confirmation of rotations.  Students will be required to provide proof of medical malpractice coverage, clear drug screen and criminal background check, immunizations, TB screening, clinical objectives and a letter of good standing from the academic program.

Students in training programs not mentioned above may check out more information here. Currently, Mercy Hospital Joplin does not accept visiting resident rotations.
