Child Paraphimosis FAQs

For boys who still have all or part of their foreskin, or the skin covering the tip of the penis, paraphimosis can prevent normal blood flow.

What are phimosis and paraphimosis in children?

Phimosis is when the foreskin can’t be pulled down from the tip of the penis. Paraphimosis is when the foreskin can be pulled down, but it can’t move back up.

What causes paraphimosis in children?

If the foreskin is left pulled down for too long after bathing and cleaning, it can swell and get trapped in place.

How is paraphimosis treated in children?

Lubrication, steroid cream or surgery can help loosen the skin. Mercy offers a variety of treatments to correct the issue.

What are possible complications and side effects of paraphimosis?

Pain, swelling, trouble urinating, infection, loss of blood flow and tissue death (necrosis) in the penis tip can sometimes occur.
