Steps to Choosing a Hospital

When you can plan ahead of a hospital stay, consult with your primary care physician to find the best hospital for your care. In an emergency, an ambulance may take you to the closet hospital for care. However, when comparing hospitals for surgery options or non-emergency care, consider the following steps:

Talk to your primary care physician and ask the following:

  • What hospitals do you work with?
  • Which hospital can provide the best care for my condition?
  • How does the hospital check and improve upon their quality of care?

Check with your insurance provider and ask the following:

  • Do I need permission from my health plan before being admitted for hospital care?
  • If I need care that is not an emergency, do I need to use certain hospitals?
  • Do I have to pay more to use a hospital that doesn’t participate in my plan?
  • Do I need to meet certain requirements to get care after I leave the hospital?

Based on your condition, ask the following:

  • Which hospitals have the best experience treating this condition?
  • Should I consider a specialty hospital, such as an orthopedic hospital or rehabilitation hospital?
  • Who will be responsible for my overall care while I’m in the hospital?
  • Will I need care after my hospital stay? If so, who will coordinate this care?
  • Are there any alternatives to hospital care?
