Mercy Hospital Jefferson Earns A Grade from Safety Watchdog Leapfrog Group

May 10, 2022

Mercy Hospital Jefferson has received its third straight A, and 10th A in the last 11 grading periods, in the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for achievements in protecting patients from harm and errors in the hospital.

“Our patients, our community and our co-workers have come to expect A grades when it comes to patient safety and quality. Providing that level of care is important to us, but it shouldn’t be taken for granted. It takes a constant focus by our co-workers to maintain that commitment to putting the patients’ needs first,” said Alisyn Beffa, Mercy Jefferson chief nursing officer. “Our team at Mercy Jefferson should be proud of achieving this grade once again.”

The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, assigns letter grades to hospitals across the country based on more than 30 performance measures reflecting errors, injuries, accidents, infections and the protocols hospitals have in place to prevent harm to patients.

Mercy Jefferson is one of only 18 hospitals throughout Missouri to earn an A grade from Leapfrog in the Spring 2022 grades. All four eligible Mercy hospitals in the St. Louis region received an A grade, which includes Mercy Hospital South, Mercy Hospital St. Louis and Mercy Hospital Washington in addition to Mercy Jefferson.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public at hospitalsafetygrade.org. Grades are updated twice annually, in the spring and fall.

“As our health care system continues to feel the strain of the pandemic, I thank the workforce and leadership of Mercy Jefferson for sustained commitment to patient safety day in and day out,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “An A Safety Grade is an outstanding achievement, and one that is not possible without a 24/7 effort by the entire health care workforce to protect patients from harm. This community should be proud.”

The A grade from The Leapfrog Group is in addition to other recent recognitions of safety and quality at Mercy Jefferson, including a 4 star rating by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
