Sedation-Free Transnasal Endoscopy (TNE)
Mercy Kids Gastroenterology now offers select patients sedation-free transnasal endoscopy (TNE), an alternative to traditional upper endoscopy. Available for children ages 5 and older, this procedure allows pediatric gastroenterologists to examine the upper digestive tract while patients remain awake, avoiding anesthesia and reducing procedure time.
During a transnasal endoscopy, a thin, flexible scope is gently passed through the nose to evaluate the throat, esophagus, stomach and upper small intestine. Because the procedure does not require sedation, patients avoid IVs, needles and anesthesia-related risks. Most procedures take only a few minutes, and many patients can return to normal activities the same day.
Benefits of Sedation-Free TNE
- No anesthesia
- No IV placement
- Short procedure time
- Faster recovery
- Same-day return to normal activities
