John R. Hargrave, president of East Central University (ECU), has been appointed to Mercy Hospital Ada’s Board of Directors.
“We are excited President Hargrave has agreed to join our board and we appreciate his commitment and dedication to Mercy Hospital Ada for the next three years,” said Di Smalley, regional president of Mercy West Communities and interim president of Mercy Hospital Ada.
“We are confident his experience and wise counsel will benefit our board as we continue to improve access to care in this area.”
ECU, under Hargrave’s leadership, has been such a strong partner over the years producing high-quality nurses from the school’s stellar nursing program and professionals from other degree programs that now work for Mercy, said Smalley.
Hargrave is chair of the Arts District of Ada’s Steering Committee and is a board member for the Ada Jobs Foundation and the ECU Foundation, Inc. He is active in the Ada Chamber of Commerce and served on Ada’s Leadership Task Force.
He also participated in the formation of the new NCAA Division II Great American Conference, serving on the Commissioner Search and Membership committees. He is active in the ECU Alumni Association and helped establish the Ardmore Alumni Advisory Board. As appointed by the chancellor, he serves on several committees through the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education.
Hargrave also serves as an advisory board member for the Miss Ada Pageant and the Jasmine Moran Children’s Museum in Seminole. He is a trustee of the Seminole State College Foundation. Most recently, he was asked to serve on the board of the African American Education Hall of Fame.
Hargrave graduated from ECU with honors in 1977, majoring in speech and sociology. He earned a law degree at the University of Oklahoma in 1980 and began practicing law.
“Mercy is vital to the success of this community,” said Hargrave. “I’m honored to serve on the Mercy Hospital Ada board and will be an active advocate for the hospital, while keeping the needs of the community at the forefront as we continue providing high-quality care for our patients in a rapidly changing health care environment."
In addition to Hargrave joining the Mercy Hospital Ada Board of Directors, Charles Mettry, DO, Dean Peterson, JD, and Carlton Tilley will serve another term.
Additional board members include: Imtiaz Ahmed, MD, Tom Bolitho, C.C. (Buck) Buxton, Jo Ann Carpenter, MD, Bill Lance, Bart McCortney, Dan Northcutt, and Mark Weems, DDS.
