Get to know Dr. Hulyalkar in her own words with this Q&A:
Why did you get into health care?
I wanted to get into a profession which is exciting and dynamic, where there is an opportunity to interact with people and involves biology, which was my favorite subject. Health care does all that and is very interesting, evolving and really gives an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution and change to the community.
Did you always know you wanted to be a physician? What drew you to pediatrics?
Yes! Since a young age, I knew I would go into medicine and be a pediatrician. When I had my children, I grew more and more fascinated by the importance of pediatricians in shaping their health and personality as well as being there for their needs and to provide guidance. I decided that I wanted to be a doctor who would give the same care for patients as I would want for my children.
I love the variety of age groups that we interact with, from a newborn to a young adult. It also involves interacting with families to assist them in caring for someone who is so special to them. It gives the opportunity to build long-term relationships and be present for every aspect of their lives. I am a people person, and love to build connections.
What should patients know about you?
I always want to treat my patients like I want my kids to be treated. I understand the challenges of working parents or families who have children with complex medical condition. I will do my best to support and partner with them for their health care needs.
Are there any specific conditions, procedures or treatments that most interest you?
I enjoy all aspects of pediatrics, from well visits where we get to counsel kids with age-appropriate guidance to sick visits where you make them comfortable and help them get better. I especially enjoy talking about healthy lifestyle. I have a board certification in pediatric obesity management, which a lot of children unfortunately struggle with. I love to create an open environment to talk about preventative medicine and whether they are struggling with weight and other coexisting conditions. I can help create a patient centered plan that works best for the families.
Why did you choose to join Mercy?
I recently moved to St Louis for opportunities for our family after caring for families in Illinois for the last decade. I chose Mercy because I relate to the mission of equitable access to care for everyone, putting patient care first and focusing on excellence and innovation.
What do you look forward to about living here?
Having lived in Illinois, I enjoyed visiting St. Louis for the beautiful parks, museums and fun things to do for my boys. I am excited for the great school systems and learning opportunities this year.
Do you mind sharing a little about your personal life?
My husband is a passionate critical care specialist, and our two boys are 11 and 7 years old. As a family, we enjoy being outdoors, hiking and swimming. We love travelling, especially visiting national parks. We enjoy exploring different cultures and cuisines.
