When a little girl can wish for anything and chooses to be a Mommy for a Day, it definitely puts things into perspective. Savannah, 8, is fighting leukemia and when Make-A-Wish Missouri heard her wish they knew it needed to be extra special. That's when social workers at Mercy Hospital St. Louis stepped up and started planning.
"It was a total team effort," said Tierra Gleason, LMSW, inpatient social worker for Mercy Kids and Mother/Baby. "Everyone wanted to make this morning unique for Savannah and let her experience all the joys that come with motherhood."
Savannah spent the morning at Mercy Hospital St. Louis. She arrived by limo and walked into a baby shower complete with gifts and treats. After the shower, Savannah was wheeled to a Labor and Birth room where she received her "baby" doll along with birth certificate and all. She named her baby Harmony Nicole and even sang a song for her baby, "Peace and Harmony." As real moms do, Savannah moved to a post-partum room where she learned how to change a diaper and swaddle her baby.
Once she left the hospital, the family continued the fun with a cooking class at Schnucks and spent the afternoon at the Magic House.
